What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine and metabolic disorder characterized by an imbalance of reproductive hormones. In a typical menstrual cycle, the ovaries produce follicles that mature and release an egg each month. In women with PCOS, elevated levels of male hormones, known as androgens, interfere with this natural process. Instead of maturing, multiple small, fluid-filled sacs (follicles) develop along the outer edge of the ovary, often resembling a 'string of pearls' on an ultrasound. Because these follicles do not release eggs, ovulation becomes irregular or stops entirely.
